"After a pretty boring atmosphere to perform magic in, we found a group of people DYING for entertainment. We satisfied their craving. Thank you to all three of you who were our audience."

Thats wassup. Just an idea though..When i perform this effect, when i tell them to give me the deck back I have the real deck palmed in my hand so when i reach over it "appears". Just try and do it as smooth as possible. It makes the reactions better in my opinion but overall great performance.

Nice reaction- the 'sillyness' of picking an invisible card of of an invisible deck and then the contrasting reality of a card being turned over in a separate deck most definitely caught them off guard. If I may, having your deck (the one we can all see) sleeved and showing that "things are not as they seem" or "and you thought I was just messing around" then showing that you "materialized" the deck has yet to fail me. I've also used the bit as an 'intro trick' to an ambitious card and saying "Well since not everyone saw that," 'materializing' the deck and saying "here, look, one card is turned over". Then the deck switch and we use the same card for the ambitious routine. I used this presentation for a group of local kids who were incredibly involved in their church (not that there's anything wrong with that) only the patter was quite different. I pulled out a quote from Corinthians II, which happened to be the topic of a Western Religion class lecture that I was actually awake for: "We see with our faith, not with our eyes." Well when that deck was there all of a sudden, between my hands, I could have knocked anyone over with a feather. I did like that you were comfortable enough to let the spectator turn over the card atop the deck as it does lend people to remember having touched the real deck. I must admit, I typically turn the card over or cull it from the deck and then let them turn it over. Your handling was so that there was contact for the spectator yet a deathgrip on the deck itself as to avoid them going through it. I'm going to try that next time I'm in the lounge. Dave

I love black people, their reactions to magic are always great. Is that a degrading comment?

Same as saying female spectators usually react better than males.

Thank you all for your support and advice especially for the long essay Dave wrote. The comments are very helpful. This is not me performing by the way, my name is Anthony. I will definately get Luke to read these wonderful comments. P.S. I LOVE black people as well. I love performing to them. =] Anthony Nguyen

"You do know there's no cards, right?" - Haha, this made me laugh. :) Great reactions to such a great effect. My advice is the same as everyone else: work on your presentation, and you will have a true gem in your repertoire.
